Paying tribute to a master composer

G. Devarajan

Calicut Harmony, a Kozhikode-based organisation of musicians, is paying a tribute to G. Devarajan on Saturday and Sunday, titled `Devaragotsavam'at the Town Hall in Kozhikode.

"Last year, we had planned to give a reception to Devarajan and he had agreed to come to Kozhikode. Unfortunately, shortly after, he passed away," says K. Devadas, general convener of the programme. "This is our tribute to him."

The tribute is mostly musical, of course. There is a competition for singing film songs composed by Devarajan, separately for male and female singers (in junior and senior sections).

"We are conducting this competition in association with the G. Devarajan Memorial Trust, Kollam," says Devadas.

The competitors have to inform the organisers in advance of the songs they plan to sing. Details about the competition can be had from cell phone numbers: 9388983141 and 9447006456.

"One of the highlights of the programme will be the presentation of `Shadkala Pallavi', which was an ambitious project of Devarajan," says Devadas.

"Trivandrum Krishnakumar will present it here."

`Devaragotsavam' will conclude with a show featuring a collection of songs composed for films and plays by Devarajan. Singers from generations new and old, including Satheesh Babu, Leena Pappan, Sindhu Premkumar, Siballa Sadanandan and Sithara Krishnakumar, will render some of the unforgettable Devarajan melodies.
